Mid Century Revisited
Studio City, CA
Perched atop a prominent ridge line in Studio City, this luxury residential remodel and addition demonstrates how severe site constraints can inspire striking architectural solutions. As specialized Los Angeles architects, our primary hurdle was navigating the complex mandates and special processing required for properties with a formal Hillside Area zoning designation. Rather than allowing rigid building envelope restrictions, height limits, and strict grading boundaries to compromise the project, our design team utilized these tight parameters to push the limits of modern hillside engineering.
The central objective of the renovation was to amplify the property's panoramic canyon views. We completely gutted a fractured, dark interior layout to engineer an expansive, column-free great room. To dissolve the boundary between the interior and the landscape, we integrated a massive, collapsible sliding glass door system that opens the entire living space to the elements. This main volume is sheltered by a dramatic, wing-like cantilevered roof canopy that required intricate structural steel framing to meet modern seismic codes while maintaining a razor-thin profile.
Throughout the transformation, the architectural execution carefully preserves the estate's original mid-century modern soul. We restored the classic exposed structural post-and-beam system and integrated warm wood paneling across the ceilings. These heritage elements are balanced by a sleek, completely re-clad contemporary exterior and a brand-new, light-filled primary suite addition that steps down the hillside to maximize privacy and canyon vistas.
