The Modern Barn
Agoura Hills, CA
This ground-up construction of a 4,500-square-foot luxury estate in Agoura Hills captures expansive mountain views through a striking transitional farmhouse design. The project required navigating the highly stringent requirements of the Calabasas/Malibu Building and Safety office to ensure strict compliance within a High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The curated material palette combines a structural black metal roof, clean stucco, and fire-rated wood paneling to seamlessly marry wildfire resilience with a contemporary architectural identity.
Inspired by the steep upslope topography, the home is perched dramatically on the lot. It features a dominant gabled roof with a wing-like pediment that juts outward to visually lift the home and frame the landscape. Inside, the design delivers a vast, column-free great room. To achieve this uninterrupted volume flowing into the kitchen, we engineered a massive steel ridge-line beam to transfer the roof load directly to the perimeter walls. Tall rear windows flood the space with natural light, while a structured mezzanine adds dynamic verticality to this modern space.
