Spanish Revival
Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Located in the exclusive luxury enclave of Rancho Santa Fe, this extensive transformation turned a generic, uninspired builder-grade house into an authentic Spanish Revival estate. The original structure lacked the architectural integrity and human scale of a true period home, reading more like a plain stucco box than a historic property. Our objective was to infuse the residence with genuine historic character while maintaining a fresh, sophisticated atmosphere for modern living.
We completely reshaped the exterior presence by designing a commanding new entrance portico and replacing the windows to establish proper architectural proportions. To inject warmth and texture, we integrated heavy timber corbels along the roof eaves and accented the roof edges with robust woodwork. We also introduced natural limestone cladding to visually break up the building's massing and create a more sophisticated exterior composition.
Inside, the soaring great room already possessed impressive volume, but it was entirely missing the necessary period detailing. We elevated the space by introducing authentic corbels and custom metal strapping to the exposed ceiling beams. The kitchen and bathrooms were stripped to the studs to introduce genuine Spanish revival tiling alongside limestone and travertine accent walls. Working in tandem with the interior design team, we balanced these historic elements with transitional furnishings and a bespoke lighting plan that dramatizes both the client's artwork and the home's meticulous new craftsmanship.
