Project Story

Originally a dated California Ranch home, this residential transformation evolved through a close collaboration with our client to capture the rustic elegance of an authentic, traditional Italian country estate. The expansive, wide geography of the lot naturally rejected a massive, monolithic structure. Instead, we designed a low-slung, horizontally oriented layout that rolls gracefully across the landscape, ensuring the traditional architecture sits in perfect harmony with its environment.

To honor historic European architecture at a welcoming, human scale, we deliberately avoided the towering, dominant entries commonly associated with medieval San Gimignano styles. The front façade is composed of multiple cascading roof volumes with a subtly integrated entrance. We sourced period-accurate materials to recreate the historic layering of exposed brick and rustic stucco typical of regional Italian villas. Natural stone accents define the entryway, providing a sophisticated texture that grounds the entire composition.

Historical authenticity extends directly into the home’s functional details. The exterior features custom-crafted wood shutters finished in a deep charcoal gray, meticulously engineered to operate exactly as they did in traditional period homes. By maintaining precise architectural proportions and prioritizing historic craftsmanship, the final design replaces an uninspired builder envelope with a soulful, timeless country sanctuary.
