The Story
This kitchen remodel project for a historic Sierra Madre, California home beautifully blends the past and present. The original 1904 residence, a masterpiece by acclaimed architects Charles and Henry Greene, is a quintessential example of the Arts & Crafts movement. This style, with its intricate craftsmanship and rustic design, heavily influenced the modern California ranch aesthetic. The home's architectural significance is well-documented, appearing in various books, articles, and even featured in Christopher Nolan’s film, Oppenheimer.
Our objective was to honor the home's heritage while introducing a modern sensibility to the kitchen. This involved preserving the original essence and authenticity of the Greene & Greene design. We carefully implemented subtle changes, including adding a new window and adjusting another to maintain the home’s historical integrity. A highlight of the project was restoring the original Greene & Greene cabinets, which the client had repurposed as stunning freestanding cabinetry that seamlessly integrates with the updated design. This project showcases our expertise in historic preservation and luxury kitchen design, creating a space that is both functional for today's living and respectful of its storied past.
